Structure resolution of enzyme for the production of anti-inflammatory itaconic acid

Researchers from the HZI in Braunschweig and TWINCORE-Center for Experimental and Clinical Infection Research successfully solved the structure of the enzyme that produces the anti-inflammatory itaconic acid. Itaconic acid was originally discovered as an active ingredient in fungi, but is also produced by the human organism, where it plays an important role in the immune system. With the knowledge of the structure of itaconic acid synthase, there is now hope for new therapeutic options.
